Where to find us!

It's been a long while since I've posted.

There have been lots of changes in our family. Dan is in dental school. Eli is in preschool. We moved to the city of Seattle. Kami's photography business is thriving.

It has been very hard for me to keep up with my photography business blog and my family blog.
So now they are 1!

If you would like to keep up with us the best place would be-

We'll see you there!

Everything Update

Hi there! It's been a while since you heard from us, but I think most of you know us in person anyway so you know what's been going on. First, I'll fill you in on Logan's situation. Logan was diagnosed with Eosinophilic Esophagitis. It's a mouthful, and it's a pretty new disease so we don't even understand it totally. The apfed.org website has a nice video for kids that explains it well, staring Gus the esophagus, and Phil the eosinophil: Gus and Phil

So we (mostly Kami) has been bouncing around between the GI doctor, the allergist, and the nutritionist for the past few months. We have found out about lots more allergies that Logan has, including cow's milk, chicken, beef, pork, potato, coconut, beans, garlic(no!), and lots more. He can still have rice, turkey, white fish, and most fruits and vegetables. The food has been the biggest challenge, but as we lose more and more foods it almost becomes simpler, because when you only have 8-10 foods that you can eat, well, that's what you eat! We should all be so lucky ;)

We also have some elemental formula that we are supposed to be feeding him. We have been giving him about 6 oz per day, not more because he doesn't care for it by itself, he has to have it mixed with rice milk or smoothies, and because he is still eating quite a bit on his own. That is where we really lucked out with Logan, he loves eating and still eats just about anything we give him. We make sure to give him lots of natural proteins like turkey, fish, and quinoa, and we feel like we're doing a pretty good job keeping him fed. Our original nutritionist wanted us to give him 6-8 oz of formula at each meal, but sorry lady, if we can keep him eating real food as much as possible and still have him maintaining a healthy weight then we're going to do it. We recently got a new nutritionist who is much more on board with this line of thinking.

The positive side of all this is that Logan is totally oblivious to his problems. He is still the happy boy he has always been. He runs and plays like anyone else and doesn't know that he is any different. Kami deserves a lot of credit for how well she has adapted our eating habits to fit Logan's needs. Now we eat rice pasta with ground turkey meat sauce, or marinated albacore tuna, or turkey tacos. We eat buckwheat blueberry pancakes or quinoa porridge for breakfast. All told the new foods are delicious. We are excited to start reintroducing foods that he is allergic to in the near future. Just because he has a mild allergy to a food doesn't necessarily mean it is a trigger for his EE. So as long as they don't aggravate his EE we can add those foods back to his diet. Hooray!

Meanwhile, Eli is doing great. We try to make sure he doesn't get overlooked with everything going on with Logan, but he does get a little jealous sometimes. Some of it is just typical age-related differences. It's hard for him when we say "Eli, you need to share with your brother" but two minutes later say "sorry Eli, but Logan doesn't understand sharing yet." Overall he is a great kid. He enjoys nursery at church, he loves singing songs and reading books, and, when I'm home, he continually asks me "Dad, will you play with me?" We play dinosaurs, cars, trains, whatever. One of his favorite games is "houses." Basically one of us pretends to be asleep while the other sneaks around playing Santa and leaves "presents", after which the second one wakes up and we all enjoy the gifts.

So that's how things are going right now. That ended up longer than I thought, but oh well. I'll try to post some pictures soon.

Coping with Change

You may or may not have noticed that we have been a bit absent for the blog as of recently. Not that there hasn't been anything to blog about, actually the opposite. There has just been too much life going on to keep up with. If you have to sit down and blog about then you have to spent time to sit down and relive it, and I just haven't been up for that.

The last 2 months have been extremely hard for our little family, me especially. Dan in school like usually, but also taking a class and preparing specifically for the Dental Admissions Test. The home we were living in was for sale. We averaged 3-4 showings a week, almost all on less than 24 hours notice. Near the end of May Logan fell off the couch and broke his arm. And then the hardest off them all, finding out that the feeling I have had about Logan's throwing up was right, it was MUCH more than just reflux.

In the beginning of June I finally insisted that our Doctor give us a referral to Children't Hospital for Logan to see a Gastroenterology Specialist. At this point he was usually throwing up 6-7 times a day, often full meals. Once we got into Children's I was reassured that this was not normal and we began running tests and scan's to find what the problem was. We waited and waited thinking no news was good news, then June 18 we got  a call. Logan is allergic to soy, wheat, corn, eggs and peanuts; with a possible diagnoses of something called Eosinophilic Esophagitis.

Here are a few things Logan can't eat- wheat flour, bread products, chips, chocolate, ice cream, corn starch, corn meal, cake, fruit snacks, popsicle, pasta, most cereal, doughnuts, chocolate milk, marshmallows, juice, candy, cake and much more. Start reading labels, you will be shocked at what is in your food.

The diagnosis of these allergies has been life changing and overwhelming. These allergies have changed everything in our lives, we are not the same people we were 5 weeks ago. I cook differently, we hardly ever eat out, I read EVER SINGLE LABEL, and I am more protective of my son than ever.

One of the hardest parts for me has been dealing with people who don't know about food allergies. I find myself wondering if the are ignorant or just don't care, most of the time I find that people just don't care. This week in a "food situation" someone said to me, "wheat, soy and eggs are in everything, what am I suppose to do about it?" Have some compassion, let's start with that!

This is the hardest thing I have ever done! I spend hours every day planning and cooking meals. I am overwhelmed and anxious every time we need to eat. I am determined to not let Logan feel left out. Saying "sorry you can't have some cake" while everyone else is eating it is not okay. Logan did not choose this, we our not trying to be difficult or hip with our food choice, this is the hand that we have been dealt!

I am very aware that Heavenly Father is mindful of our situation. The day we got the diagnosis of the food allergies I got a call from a friend. I had sent her something in the mail that should have arrived the week before but she had just gotten it that day, not a coincidence. We had a wonderful chat and my spirits were lifted and I knew I could make it through this, I was not alone. I have been blessed with the wonderful talent of cooking. I have been able to continue to make things we love and have an understanding of how to change and substitute in recipes. My amazing Mother is constantly looking for products, recipes and help for how to feed Logan. She is only a phone call away and I could not have produce as many delicious things as I have without her.

I am struggling to cope with our new life, but I know that brighter days are ahead. Those days may be 6 months away, but they will come, and I will be more grateful than ever for them. I can already see the benefits of this hard work. Logan is a much happier and healthier boy. My struggles are not in vain. One day he will thank me for what I am doing for him, and I will be able to say it was all worth it.

Eli Sayings

Eli: There's a boy outside dad. He's thirteen years old. He-he's thirteen old.
Dad: How do you know he's thirteen?
Eli: Because he's thirteen.
Dad: But how do you know?
Eli: Because he's thirteen.
Dad: But HOW do you KNOW?
Eli: Oh, I just made it up.

Later...

Eli: Dad I want to eat that grape.
Dad: ...Um, you mean the one I just ate? It's too late, you have to tell me before I eat it. Here, have this other one.
Eli: BUT I WANT THAT ONE!!! (starts rubbing his eyes furiously)
Mom: Eli, why are you rubbing your eyes?
Eli: BECAUSE THERE'S WATER POURING OUT OF THEM!!!
